DRS Notice 22-003, Elected or Governor-Appointed Officials and Membership Enrollment

Notice No: 22-003
Date: April
Applies to: All Employers
Subject: DRS Notice 22-003, Elected or Governor-Appointed Officials and Membership Enrollment

Please instruct newly elected or governor-appointed officials that come to work at your agency to the membership enrollment webpage Elected or Governor-Appointed Official  on the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) website (under the Planstab).  The page is designed to guide them through the requirements for membership enrollment, and it will give them access to the membership application form. Whether they are enrolling or opting out of membership, they must first complete the form and send it to the DRS.

Do not automatically report them to membership.*

After review, we will tell you the specific type code and when you may start reporting retirement data. You can also find the type code tied to specific elected or appointed-officials here. For example, an elected city government official’s type code is 11.

*Note: Elected sheriffs who meet the definition of a Law Enforcement Officers’ and Fire Fighters’ Retirement System (LEOFF) member, as defined in WAC 415-104-225, are mandated into LEOFF. Elected sheriffs who meet this definition should be automatically reported in LEOFF.
