DRS Notice 23-017, Retirement Planning Email Scam Alert

Notice No: 23-017
Date: October 05, 2023
Applies to: School Districts, Charter Schools, Tribal Schools, Educational Service Districts
Subject: DRS Notice 23-017, Retirement Planning Email Scam Alert

We’ve learned about an email scam targeting TRS and SERS employees. Those who have been affected report that a scammer presents themselves through email as a retirement planning professional who offers to set up an appointment for a Zoom consultation. During the Zoom appointment, the scammer gains the employee’s trust and asks for personal identifying information, such as a Social Security number, and appears to have knowledge about the employee’s DRS retirement account.

Please remind your employees that DRS never sends email requesting to set up a Zoom consultation.

Your employees must reach out to us for assistance with their retirement accounts. If you have employees who are age 40+ and they haven’t yet retired, they can schedule a Zoom or phone appointment through their online accounts.

We’ve published an article about email scams and what everyone should know, on the DRS website. Please share this link with your employees.

If you have any questions regarding this DRS Notice, please contact Employer Support Services at 360-664-7200, option 2, or 800-547-6657, option 6, option 2; or email us.
