DRS Notice 23-016, New Return to Work Rules and Type Code Changes

Notice No.: 23-016

Date: October 02, 2023

Applies to: School Districts

Subject: DRS Notice 23-016, New Return to Work Rules and Type Code Changes

Starting Jan. 1, 2024, there will be new Type Codes required for reporting certain retirees who have returned to work.

Here are the changes:

  • A 2008 Early Retirement Factor (2008 ERF) retiree will no longer be reported differently than a normal retiree and DRS is eliminating Type Code 96. This is a result of SHB 1056, which eliminated the stricter return to work rules for 2008 ERFs.

  • New Type Code 93 is for reporting a retiree hired into non-administrative position.

  • New Type Code 94 is for reporting a retiree hired into an administrative position at a second-class school district and retired prior to 1/1/22.

If the retiree has retired from more than one DRS-covered retirement system or has a disability retirement, they should contact DRS to discuss eligibility before accepting employment.
